Riley Short, Interim Pastor

Rev. Riley P. Short was born in a parsonage in Greenville, Kentucky. He is the son of Mrs. Louise Short and the late Bishop Roy Hunter Short. His father served as Bishop in the Florida, Tennessee, and Kentucky Conferences.

Rev. Short is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He served as pastor of County Line United Methodist Church (Acworth, GA) from January of 1958 to June 1960, after which he served several churches in Tennessee before moving to Florida. Following a six-year appointment as Associate Minister at Christ United Methodist Church in St. Petersburg, he served for seven years as Senior Minister of Morrison United Methodist Church in Leesburg. Rev. Short then was the pastor of Coral Gables United Methodist Church in the Miami District until September 1992, when he became Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church of Lakeland, the largest church in the Florida Conference. He retired from full-time ministry in June of 2003. Riley has served as interim pastor of Palm Harbor United Methodist Church and First Church of Jacksonville.

Rev. Short is in demand as a speaker at laymen's retreats, youth camps and couples retreats. Since retirement he has served as interim pastor at Palm Harbor United Methodist Church and as the interim at his home church, First UMC of Jacksonville. He often is invited to preach at churches around the Florida Conference and is the professor of preaching at Asbury Seminary in Orlando.

Rev. Short and his wife Claire have four children and eleven grandchildren. Their son, Phillip is a pastor of First United Methodist of Stuart, Florida. Their son, Hunter and his family are active members of St. James UMC in Tampa. Daughter Sally and her family are active members of Coral Gables UMC and daughter Susan and husband are active members of The Quaker Church in New York City.
