One of the
wonderful days in the church year is what the more Liturgical
Churches call “The Festival of the Christian Home”. We usually
refer to that Sunday as “Mother’s Day”. It is often a well attended
service and a celebration of women and Mothers in particular. We do
well to honor our mothers.
Last year
I heard a report of a survey that polled mothers and asked them what
they wanted most for Mother’s Day. I guessed breakfast in bed would
lead the list, or maybe flowers, but the most desired gift for the
majority of mothers was to be able to sleep. I was amazed that I
had not guessed that. What a nice gift to give to your mom –
allowing them to sleep in for a change. In fact, on Mother’s Day I
am declaring that all moms can sleep thru my sermon and not feel
guilty.
I know
that all women have not become a mother and that may be a painful
thought and therefore Mother’s Day is a difficult experience. I
also know that not everyone has had a good mother and that for those
unfortunate people it is not a good time. But I have been blessed
by having a good Mom and I am pleased to celebrate her. I also
have been blessed by being raised in a Christian home, so I
celebrate the Sunday by recalling how rich I am because of my
background. We can also use Mother’s Day to commit ourselves to
making sure that our children are blessed by growing up with a good
mother and a good Christian home.
On
Mother’s Day let us join the ancient prophet and declare, “As for me
and my house we will serve the Lord.” What greater gift can we give
to our children?
